What is Flag Day? Where did it come from? Why is it on the calendar on June 14th? These questions came up recently in a discussion and so this year we decided to celebrate Flag Day with a fun get-together with delicious food, fun activities for adults and kids, and a little bit of educational trivia.
We created an event poster to invite family to come over for a cookout to celebrate Flag Day and we planned a few surprises during the evening. Instead of a traditional cookout with burgers, hotdogs, baked beans, and potato salad. We went with pulled pork, grilled street corn, mac and cheese, a veggie tray, and fruit skewers.

We sent out the poster invite and to those who RSVP, we ask if they could bring a side dish and sent them a photo collage of ideas to choose from. My husband and I provided the pulled pork sandwiches and fruity American popsicles.
We decided to create several different “door prizes” not only for those who won corn hole or badminton games but also for people who won the trivia games about our flag’s history. We created a T-Shirt for my husband and I to wear and then we also bought a few extras as prizes. We also create one of a kind WordArt piece with words that describe our American flag and shaped them in the form of an American flag. We used this wordart to print placemats to include with our blue and red napkins and then also printed this in several different sizes on canvas for a décor piece to give away as prizes.
Our last prize was to be awarded to whoever had the most points at the end of the night. The Grand Prize was a Motivational Canvas Poster that included the Time of Day pictures of our American flag in our front yard to give out as our “grand prize”.

I had come up with a cool activity for the kids to do before eating while the adults played cornhole, but my sister want to be in charge of the craft activity, so I decided to create a sweet USA flag treat for all of us to eat with homemade brownies. I made it so the colors would fit with the theme of celebrating and learning about our American flag. I had watermelon and blueberries, but the white part kind of stumped me for a while until I came across coconut milk and pineapple juice. I made these fun Flag Day popsicles and put together a tutorial video of the process for anyone to make themselves.
After eating and playing corn hole and badminton we gathered inside for a fun trivia game for adults and kids. Each person was given a little United States flag to hold up if they knew the answer. This is going to get loud with people talking at once, but that will be a great game to do right before all the fireworks begin.
